Everybody's working for the weekend

What did I expect really?
I mean when Marlene asked I had to do an internet search to remember more than one Loverboy song.
During the first hour of this 90 minute show, I vaguely recognized another song and I got really excited when they were doing some kind of jazz fusion that seemed to be moving into the Doors' "Riders on the Storm". But then it segued into something else. Don't know what.
Of course, how could they compare to the emotion of Jim Morrison?

Riders on the Storm

Loverboy had a few hits, but their lead singer doesn't have a strong voice, and as is often the case with rock bands, the vocabulary is limited. How many times do you need to hear "You're a great audience .... this place is rocking!!" The last half hour got better. You might say I'm showing my age, but I would've preferred a good Doors tribute band.

Believe

Atlantic City is trying to be more like Vegas. We saw this show last week and it had just about everything you can want in a place where you don't know what to believe and you don't take anything home (especially your money) - - what happens in Vegas....

The performers were of varying quality. Cher, Liza, Patti LaBelle and Prince were outstanding. Bette so, so. Joan Rivers was probably good, but I don't like Joan Rivers so I had a bias. And, Nancy Sinatra was a waste of time - fortunately only a few minutes. All in all a fun show. My favorite was Patti - she/he rocked the house down.

Please Release Me

Englebert Humperdink had a number 1 hit with this song. We saw him in concert at Foxwoods / MGM and even though he's 75 years old he can still sing!

It was a poignant memory for me though because my aunt Mary used to always play his songs on the juke box at my family's restaurant. She loved those crooners. She was always a super aunt to me. I can still remember going to her house on Sylvia street after school and having "made from scratch" cake - she wouldn't stoop to baking a "mix" from a box. She was justly proud of her baking skills. She's probably still cooking in heaven.

Anyway, the concert was fun... we were some of the young uns there.
Hey -- getting older but still feeling young.

What a Wicked Game

Another fun concert at Foxwoods MGM Grand Theater.... and we had pretty good seats! Chris Isaak put on quite a show. The first half consisted primarily of his music (and of course his blockbuster) "Wicked Game"

Wicked Game

He's recorded some other great tunes
Take a couple of minutes to listen to "Forever Blue"
Forever Blue

The second half of the show featured a new album they recorded (not released yet) at Sun Studios in Memphis - - - which we visited last fall!!! A lot of covers of the greats from the past - Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis - they brought the house down on
Great Balls of Fire

Have to admit I only knew "Wicked Game" so I was pleasantly surprised that the concert was so good.

Busted flat in Baton Rouge

Who'd have ever thunk it?
Kris Kristofferson in New Bedford?
He put on a great show at the Z; just him and a guitar and harmonica and one poetic moment after another.
At 74 years old - still singing - and unlike what they look for on Idol or the Voice he's not really a great singer, maybe that's another reason why I like him.
He's also intelligent - a Rhodes scholar - and is against war - and talks about it on the stage - someone might call him a radical!!!!
An enjoyable night for all.

Most of his songs were made famous by others.
This is probably his most famous - a version by him

Moby Dick

I received a Kindle for my birthday & love it!

I've been reading Moby Dick - - thought that as a native New Bedford-ite I should finally read this tale that is so celebrated in the city that Ishmael started his voyage from. I went to a  parochial high school and for some unknown reason they didn't make us read this book.

I've discovered some interesting tidbits -- in case you never read the book (or forgot details) the first mate is named Starbuck and sure enough the coffee company that is so ubiquitous in the US is named after him. (according to Wikipedia)
"The company is named in part after Starbuck, Captain Ahab's first mate in the novel Moby-Dick, as well as a turn-of-the-century mining camp (Starbo or Storbo) on Mount Rainier. According to Howard Schultz's book Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time, the name of the company was derived from Moby-Dick, although not in as direct a fashion as many assume. Gordon Bowker liked the name "Pequod" (the ship in the novel), but his then creative partner Terry Heckler responded, "No one's going to drink a cup of Pee-quod!" Heckler suggested "Starbo". Brainstorming with these two ideas resulted in the company being named for the Pequod's first mate, Starbuck."

And, due to some research regarding some of the language in the novel, I now know where the term "scuttlebutt" originated.
 Again from Wikipedia:

"Scuttlebutt in slang usage means rumor or gossip, deriving from the nautical term for the cask used to serve water (or, later, a water fountain).[1][2]
The term corresponds to the iconic colloquial concept of a water cooler in an office setting, which at times becomes the focus of congregation and casual discussion. Water for immediate consumption on a sailing ship was conventionally stored in a scuttled butt: A butt (cask) which had been scuttled by making a hole in it so the water could be withdrawn. Since sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became Navy slang for gossip or rumours."

Amazing things you can learn from reading!!!!
My librarian daughter should be proud.

I'm back

Wow!!!!
Can't believe how long it's been since I posted anything.
We went to see the "Men of Soul" at Foxwoods... a romantic, mellow sound... Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson, and Providence's own Jeffrey Osborne. A good show that did include a lot of hootin & hollerin get down sound. We enjoyed the show.

Here's  Freddie's  big hit...

Here are three by Peabo

And of course Jeffrey's hit that got re-energized by being used on a show that I think is a totally disgusting  waste of time - - "The Bachelor"
